Where We Work

During its first five years of operations, ISLP selected three geographic regions of greater focus: 1) Russia and Eastern Europe; 2) Sub-Saharan Africa; and 3) India and South Asia. The reasons for the selection of these regions were both practical and programmatic. Practical considerations included the significant interest in our services from organizations and institutions in these regions and, in the case of many African countries and India, the ability to communicate effectively in English. Programmatic reasons included sweeping legal changes for which help from experienced lawyers from developed democratic countries would be valuable; the extreme need for law reform that addresses economic development and human rights issues; and a burgeoning human rights NGO (nongovernmental organization) movement for which capacity building would add significant value. While ISLP has focused efforts on these three regions, it continues to provide assistance on projects in other regions and for groups working internationally in many regions. Described below are representative projects in each of our focus regions.
