From January to June 2003, an ISLP volunteer worked onsite with the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Delhi</st1:city></st1:place> legal staff, helping to build staff capacity and assisting with research and writing of briefs, legal manuals and HRLN's magazine, <i style="">Combat Law</i>. In addition to assistance with specific human rights issues and mentoring of staff, the relationships developed during this onsite assignment led to the selection of HRLN Executive Director Golin Gonsalves to receive the American Bar Association's International Human Rights Award of the year in 2004 and to the arrangement by ISLP of a three-week internship with the Manhattan District Attorney's Office for a senior staff attorney from HRLN working on child abuse issues. </span></p><p align="justify"><b><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">Kala Raksha:</span></b><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;"> This Indian NGO works to preserve handicrafts and native arts and promote self-sufficiency among Indian women engaged in textile and other crafts work. ISLP volunteers from a major law firm assisted Kala Raksha in establishing a <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">U.S.</st1:place></st1:country-region> affiliate to fundraise for their school and sell products produced by the women within its network. The firm also advisede Kala Raksha on business law issues in connection with the importation and sale of Kala Raksha products. </span></p><p align="justify"><b><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">Unitus:</span></b><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;"> Unitus is a microfinance institution (MFI) based in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">India</st1:place></st1:country-region> that aims to expand significantly the number of borrowers whom microloan funds can serve. Most MFIs start out as non-profit organizations, relying on grants for loan capital, and end up serving fewer than 2,500 poor borrowers, even though the demand for their services is far greater. ISLP volunteers with a major U.S.-based firm provided Unitus with a range of business law services in the <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">United States</st1:place></st1:country-region>. </span></p><p align="justify"><b><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">Human Rights Law Network (HRLN):</span></b><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;"> ISLP volunteers have provided extensive research and analysis on a wide range of human rights and civil liberties issues for HRLN since 2003. Issues covered include the rights of criminal defendants, including the use of computer evidence, the right to adequate counsel and forced confessions; sexual harassment in the workplace; damages for families of disappeared persons; children's rights and religious freedom; and many others. ISLP volunteers from several countries have provided comparative analyses on these and other matters. In particular, memoranda on the rights of the disabled provided by six offices of a global firm were included in the first book on the rights of the disabled in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">India</st1:place></st1:country-region>. In addition, law firms from the <st1:country-region w:st="on">U.S.</st1:country-region>, the <st1:country-region w:st="on">U.K.</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Canada</st1:country-region> and <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Australia</st1:place></st1:country-region> provided memoranda on the rights of persons who are HIV-positive for a major India-wide conference.
