Ashoka Innovators for the Public

Ashoka is a global non-profit that invests in "social entrepreneurs" by selecting and giving 3-year support grants to individuals who have unprecedented ideas for change in their communities. Ashoka Fellows often face challenges for which they require sophisticated legal advice-expertise few voluntary organizations can afford. Through this partnership with ISLP, Ashoka offers its Fellows an opportunity to secure pro bono legal assistance that will enable them to address their legal needs and thus more effectively implement their ideas for social change. ISLP has worked closely with four Ashoka Fellows, and continues to seek new Ashoka Fellows for assistance.

International Law Institute

The International Law Institute (ILI), begun at Georgetown University in 1971, has trained over 8,000 professionals from 180 countries in commercial legal subjects. ISLP is working with ILI to provide experienced volunteers to conduct seminars and trainings for ILI's Uganda and Nigeria campuses. In August and October 2003, three ISLP volunteers conducted one-week seminars on corporate governance, competition policy and legal issues in e-commerce. ISLP is now working with ILI in Uganda and Washington, DC to provide instructors for the 2004 academic year.

Open Society Institute Justice Initiative

The Open Society Justice Initiative (OSIJI), a program of the Open Society Institute, promotes rights-based law reform, builds knowledge and strengthens legal capacity worldwide. OSIJI pursues law reform activities grounded in the protection of human rights and contributes to the development of legal capacity for open societies. ISLP has provided volunteers to assist in OSIJI projects in Bulgaria, Lithuania, and Mongolia, where volunteers have trained staff, developed materials and conducted evaluations of the first public defender offices in Eastern Europe.
